Many states have rules regarding the number of times an applicant is allowed to take a qualifying examination such as NBME, NBOME, FLEX, or USMLE. If it took you several tries you need to pay special attention to each state's rules which vary greatly from state to state. States with No Examination Attempt Limit: Alaska Arizona Colorado Connecticut Delaware Florida Hawaii Indiana Michigan New York Virginia West Virginia States with Specific Examination Attempt Limits Keep in mind, many of these states offer a waiver so you may still qualify for licensure. Due to disagreements about whether or not to raise taxes or cut spending to balance their budget, the state of Minnesota has shut down most of their governmental offices. More than 20,000 of Minnesota's 36,000 state employees have been laid off in the shutdown including all staff at the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. Many times a foreign medical school graduate will want to obtain a medical license in one or more US States. Whether or not they ever plan to practice here, it is always a good idea to have the option. Same is true for Citizenship or Alien Status. Some states require you to be a Citizen or have a Green Card or a Work Visa but many states will allow you to get a medical license without any sort of authorization to work in the US. Those states consider licensure and employment to be two separate issues.
